February 10, 1712/13, circular letter from the commissioners of the society, addressed to Josiah Cotton, a Plymouth, Mass., teacher, missionary, and town official, who for nearly forty years (dismissed 1744) received an annual stipend of twenty pounds for his preaching to the Indians.

The "Society for Propagation of the Gospel in New England" was chartered in 1649 for the purpose of converting the New England Indians. In 1661/62 it was rechartered and named the "Company for Propagation of the Gospel in New England and the parts adjacent in America."
